A weather report of Santiago

We are ending November and we can see that the weather is hot. Summer has not yet started and the temperatures are very high, over 28 or 30ºC. Also you feel humidity when you're out in the streets. However, in the night everything changes. You have to use a jacket if you don’t want to get a cold. Sometimes we saw the forecast at TV but they don’t know predict exactly that will happen.

On this time of the year it’s so difficult to find rain, but not impossible.

The weather in Santiago is changing. The summer is coming and high temperatures are expected the next days. For the next week we will have maximum of 30º C, and sunny weather. But don’t be fooled, at night the temperatures will fall to a minimum of 12º C, and maybe you’ll need more than a T-shirt, short and sandals. Anyway it’s time to go out and have a walk on the parks, or spend the day on the swimming pool, but always with sunblock. Remember this season is the most dangerous in terms of UV radiation. No rain expected in the capital.

A city tour around Santiago

Shopping Tour

Whenever you want to go buy something in Santiago you can visit the different malls of the capital. There are different places for different things. If you want to buy good brand clothes no matter the price of them, you can go to Parque Arauco or Alto Las Condes. Both have the most important international brand stores worldwide. They also have big foodgardens, where you can eat whatever you want in any time. They’re placed in Las Condes and you can arrive very easily on a car or a bus. There’s one mall specially designed for women, because it doesn’t have many stores for men. It’s called Apumanque and it’s one of the oldest from all the malls in Santiago. It doesn’t have too many brand stores, but instead is a much cheaper mall. But if you want to go cheaper you should visit all the Mall Plaza buildings (Plaza Vespucio, Plaza Tobalaba, Plaza Oeste, etc.). The thing is these malls are sometimes much more full of people than the other ones.

Every day we can see more tourists walking around Santiago. The reason is the great places you can visit in this city. If I had to recommend a foreigner a citytour it would be like this: Start at Cerro San Cristobal. You can take great pictures of the city from the top, and have a great experience riding the “funicular”. If you do this at morning, te smog still lets you see the beautiful city laying beneath. Then, go downtown and visit La Moneda and Plaza de Armas. You must have lunch at Mercado Central, te marketplace where you can eat the best fresh fish. I recommend you to try “centolla” a type of crab typical from Chile. Then take a walk at Lastarria, a beautiful street where you can buy cool stuff and have a coffe break. Then go to Museo de Bellas Artes and Parque Forestal. There are always interesting things to see there. You can have an ice cream at Emporio de las Rosas, a typical place known for having strange flavours such as rose, peppermint or ginger. I recommend ending the day at Bellavista, a bohemian neighborhood full of great restaurants, bars and discos.

A comparison between two movies

I like all sorts of films, I’m not the type of person who enjoys watching only one genre. For instance, two movies that I really loved are The Notebook and Zohan, and they’re completely different one from another. Zohan is the story of a Israeli soldier, interpreted by Adam Sandler, who goes to USA to become a hair dresser. Its plot makes no sense what so ever, but its hilarious and I laughed the whole time. On the other hand, The Notebook is a romantic drama that shows a forbidden love between two young persons, narrated by an old man who reads a diary. This is the type of movie that makes me cry until I dry out of tears.

Zohan and The Notebook have nothing in common. One is ridiculous, the other is serious. One is funny the other one is sad. Though, I enjoyed both of them, its just a matter of watching every film at the right time wit the right people.

-----------------------------

I think that the two best movies of all times are Back to the Future and Pulp Fiction. Both are very different in all means. Back to the Future is an 80’s movie (directed by the great Robert Zemeckis) that narrates the story of an adolescent, who travels through time on a time machine made from a classic car. Why would one watch this movie? It has a simple but entertaining story, with lots of 80’s cliches, and it has also a great soundtrack and scenarios. You could watch that movie over and over again, and you’d never be bored. It’s a good movie to watch in family.

Pulp Fiction is very different. It’s a 90’s movie, directed by Quentin Tarantino. It tells the story of a pair of assassins, who get involved in a few troubles while doing a job. It has a complex story, with many parallel stories narrated along that finally get connected in one same point. It has some violent and crude scenes, but the story and the actors make it one of the best movies ever. It has also a really great soundtrack. Not recommended for children although.

A description of the school system in Chile. Description of the school uniform

Chile has three kinds of education system: municipal, subsidized and private. In the last one, any person who wants to study there, have to pay for this service. In the case of municipal education and the subsidized one, is the State who pay for the persons who studied in this kind of school.

Sometimes, the payday for the Municipal and Subsidized education is too poor and that means a bad education for this students. One example of that, is the bad conditions of some schools. Many of there haven’t the minimum conditions to educate. Two years ago, this situation leads a group of students to start a demonstration in rejection for the system of education in Chile. In the time of that demonstration, the schools were closed because the students took them. Before a lot of negotiations with the State, the students finished the strike and return to the classes.

In the case of uniform, the men have a blue or whit shirt and gray pants. The shoes are dark blue or black. The girls have more than one uniform, but the usual is with a dark blue jumper, a white shirt and sometimes with a tie. The shoes are dark blue.

The education in Chile has three kinds: Municipal, Subsidized and Private. The first and the second are paid by the State, but the last is not from this organization, and the people that study there, have to pay for her. Also, in all of them, the studies are obligatory until eight grade.
In Chile are many kinds of uniforms: for the girls, one kind is a dark blue jumper. Under the jumper is a white shirt and sometimes with a tie. Generally the socks are dark blue or gray. The second kind of girl’s uniform is a dark blue or gray skirt, with a white shirt and socks, depending of the skirt’s color.
Men have one kind of uniform: gray pants and a blue or white shirt. For both the shoes are dark blue.

I have lucky and I studied in a private and German school, where I had good teachers and a lot of friends. The Thomas Morus School, give me the tools to be the person that I’m now.

In my years like a student, I wear jumper, a uniform that a lot of school in the country use. Is blue and the people can choose the large of them. The socket that I use are blue too and the shoes black. I liked the jumper because was comfortable and simple.

My school was not so strict, so I can use a pink bag, flower on my hair or ring. I played volleyball for nine year, so sometimes I wear snickers with my uniform and the teacher never said anything to me.

A description of the area you live

I live in El Golf. Whenever, I see a lot of people walking the streets because there are many offices. They are always walking fast and talking on cell. Here, you can fond a lot of restaurants with a lot of people, no matter whether it is day or night. You can see people of all ages and every time.

Also, you can found a lot of places to stay and relax many places on every corner and sidewalks on the streets.

There are antiques on Sunday in the plaza Perú and families are going after lunch on the sector. They have a lot of different things, like antique mirrors, clothes and every kind of collections.

I love my neighborhood because here is everything I need. The subway to go to university is two blocks form here. I have a lot of restaurants near here. A Church walking distance and if I want to ride a bike, the streets are quiet.

By Manuela Jobet
-------------------------

I live in La foresta de los Domínicos, near San Carlos de Apoquindo, in Las Condes. In my neighborhood are only houses, big families and a lot of dogs. I always see kids playing on the street and different people riding a bike or running.

Near my house, a 2 block of distance, is a little park with different games for kids and a 8 blocks of distance is another park, bigger than the other one. My dad every night go with two of my three dogs to this park because is safe and beautiful to have a quiet and relax moment.

I like the area where I live, but the access is not easy. My neighborhood doesn’t have a lot of busses and neither Subway. However, I can do a lot of things, like run, make shops or drink a coffee with my mother and if I need something, like an ingredient for a recipe or wash a jacket, near my house are different shops to resolve this thing.

I live in Queens, a quiet area of Santiago. My house is in the middle of two big streets: Francisco Bilbao and Príncipe de Gales. However, my street is so beautiful and without noise.
Behind of my house, is the Country Club, a golf club that is a birds reserve too. Is a big green area in the commune and also a beautiful place.
The area where I live is so comfortable, because I have closer many stores. On the corner is a Copec, a Starbucks Coffe, a Blockbuster Video and a Burger King, all I can need.
I love the place where I live, because I know my neighbors and all of my family lives in Queens.
If a day I have to live with my husband and my sons, I’ll choose this commune, because is the place where I’ve lived all of my life.

I live in Las Condes, a beautiful and comfortable commune of Santiago. My address is Rio Guadiana 8279 and is too near of Cristobal Colon Avenue. Padre Hurtado and Apoquindo avenues are also nearly, but not so much.

If you walk two blocks by Colon Avenue, you will arrive to Atenas Roundabout. In this area, you can find a lot of things. Two supermarkets, two gas station, McDonalds, KTC Fried Chicken and Blockbuster Video. Also you can find a Pub-café named “Mosai-café”, a perfect place to go out in the night.

Another attraction of this area is Los Dominicos Square, located five blocks from my home. This place is perfect for relaxing times and any time you can have there a rest. In the weekend, people play football, ride a bicycle and run by the Square. Besides, for the people who believe in God, there is Los Dominicos Church.

Your future ambition as a professional

I still have two more years for my graduation in Journalism, but I still have more than an only way too choose of what I want to do after leaving College. My first option is to be a Sports Journalist. In this case, I should go to Argentina, because in Chile, this career is not well developed at all. Argentina has many academies and colleges who are dedicated in this area. Besides, the journalists of this country are very good and they have more knowledge in any sports.

By Pedro Miranda

-----------------------------------------

In two years more, I’ll go out from the University. In 2011, I’m go to graduate like a Journalist. But I don’t want to stay in Chile. With my boyfriend Felipe want to go to Australia to study a magister and to learn English.
However, we want to return to Chile, because we want to make a family here. I love to write, and I want to job on a newspaper or on a magazine. But I know that the Journalism is not easy today. Chile has 9.000 graduated Journalists, but only a few have a real job in newspapers, TV or radio.
For this reasons, I want to have so many titles more, to be an outstanding Journalist and not a typical. Anyway, I don’t go to reject the job in companies, TV or radio. I love the Jorunalism and I’m go to accept all the jobs related.

By Valeria Villalobos

--------------------------------------------

I should be done with my career in two years and I don’t want to work immediately. First, I want to travel a few months in Europe and visit a lot of museum.

Then, I want to study something related with journalism and with the public relations at Columbia University and live some time and New York and write for the New York Times.

Then I come back to Santiago and I want to work in an Organization and collaborate in different magazines.

And now that my planes for my future are like dreams, but I now that I can to make my ideas true.

By Camila Fuentes
---------------------------------

I should be done with my career next year, but I don’t want to work immediately. I love journalism but I still do not know what I want to do. I always think that I should write in a magazine, but after studying for five years, it changed. I like literature and I love to write, but now my future is very uncertain. I want to go out to study something else related to communications, and then, I will decide what I’m going to do in the future. For now, I want to finish my career with good grades.
